Four tomato seeds given to a Virginia schoolteacher by one of her ninth-grade students marked the beginning of a nearly five-decade effort to preserve a family heirloom. Peg Davis was given the seeds after the student feared her grandparents’ tomato variety, grown for years by her family in Pennsylvania, could disappear.
