ScienceAlaska Elk Hunt Limits: Transplanted herd now tightly managed; 25 cow tags cap 2025–26 season

In the spring of 1929, eight young Roosevelt elk stepped off a boat onto Afognak Island in the Kodiak Archipelago, the first Roosevelt elk calves released in Alaska. Nearly a century later, their descendants number over a thousand across two islands, and a portion of that population is hunted every year under one of the state's oldest wildlife management programmes.
